چکیده

Toxic and fimbrial virulence factors as well as genetic diversity of 11 Escherichia coli O149:K91, F4 strains isolated from pigs with diarrhoea in Germany were examined. The ability of enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus – polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) to discriminate E. coli strains was evaluated. Two different virulence marker profiles: F4/EAST1/LTI/STII and F4/EAST1/LTI/STI/STII were obtained. Comparison of ERIC-PCR fingerprinting revealed a relatively low percentage of genotypic similarity between the tested isolates in spite of the presence almost the same virulence marker genes. The obtained results showed that the ERIC-PCR method could be very useful for study of genetic difference between bacterial isolates especially when the tested strains showed the same virulence markers.

An investigation of the presence of Escherichia coli O149:K91:F4 on pig farms in southern Ontario and the use of antimicrobials and risk factors associated with the presence of this serogroup.

Prevalence, causative factors, treatment, and preventative measures for O149:K91:F4 Escherichia coli infection of postweaning pigs was determined by using a cross-sectional study including 70 farms in Ontario. Surveys were distributed and samples cultured bacteriologically, resulting in 30% of farms testing positive to E. coli 0149:K91:F4. Possible causative factors, such as housing or nutritio...

Aetiologically Relevant Typing of E. Coli Isolates from Diseased Pigs in Switzerland during 2014 and 2015

In this study, 210 intestinal Escherichia (E.) coli isolates from enteropathogenic diseased pigs were screened for their virulence factors (F4, F5, F6, F18, STa, STb, LT, STx2e and intimin) by PCR and serogrouped by slide-agglutination (O8:K87, O45, O138:K81, O139:K82, O141:K85, O147:K89, O157 and O149:K91). In total, 24.8% enterotoxigenic E. coli, 7.1% enteropathogenic E. coli and 5.2% oedema ...

Isolation and characterization of nine bacteriophages that lyse O149 enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.

The goal of this study was to isolate and characterize phages that might be used in prevention and treatment of porcine post-weaning diarrhea due to O149 enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC). Serotype O149:H10:F4 was especially targeted because this is the dominant ETEC serotype. Mixtures of 10 strains of O149:H10:F4 ETEC and of 10 O149:H43:F4 ETEC were used as hosts for isolation of phages in sewage...

Antimicrobial resistance genes in enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli O149:K91 isolates obtained over a 23-year period from pigs.

A total of 112 Escherichia coli O149:K91 strains isolated from pigs with diarrhea in Quebec, Canada, between 1978 and 2000 were characterized for their genotypic antimicrobial resistance profiles. Tests for resistance to 10 antimicrobial agents were conducted. Resistance to tetracycline and sulfonamides was found to be the most frequent, but resistance to cefotaxime and ceftiofur was absent. An...

Serotypes, virulence genes, and PFGE profiles of Escherichia coli isolated from pigs with postweaning diarrhoea in Slovakia

BACKGROUND Postweaning diarrhoea (PWD) in pigs is usually the main infectious problem of large-scale farms and is responsible for significant losses worldwide. The disease is caused mainly by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC). In this study a total of 101 E. coli isolated from pigs with PWD in Slovakia were characterized using phenotypic and genotypic metho...
